Dr. Meli has been interested in pediatric care since elementary school—her father was a pediatrician, and she'd join him on house calls and hospital rounds. On Saturdays and in the summer, she was a 'nurse' helper, showing patients to their exam rooms and answering phones.
After graduating from Providence College, she headed to Rome for medical school at La Sapienza—where she met her husband. Despite not speaking the language (yet), she plunged into the deep end, learning quickly to take oral exams in Italian.
Having completed her residency at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Dr. Meli has spent almost 30 years caring for families in Wall. She regularly bumps into patients out and about—"I've diagnosed many illnesses while shopping in the supermarket"—as well as further afield, including a chance encounter with a family with triplets on vacation in Florida.
"The best thing about pediatrics? Continuity of care," she says. "Meeting a patient in the nursery and caring for them and their families through childhood into adolescence is very rewarding."
